Details About Oscilloscope Simulator
The top part of the simulator displays the oscilloscope, while the bottom part shows a frequency generator connected directly to it.
The oscilloscope is organized into sections: the display, time base, and level settings.
The trigger area displays the trigger level and whether the signal is rising or falling.
You can choose the slope, either increasing or decreasing.
The trigger activates when the signal reaches the trigger level, depending on your settings.
A green bar in the oscilloscope display marks the trigger level and adjusts with the voltage range.
The display also shows the signal amplitude per division and the time base setting.
The frequency generator allows you to adjust two settings.
The Amplitude knob controls the peak-to-peak amplitude of the sine wave.
For example, if you set it to 20 mV, the sine wave will oscillate between 0 and 20 mV.
The frequency knob adjusts the frequency of the sine wave.
Both the amplitude and frequency settings are displayed on the frequency generator’s screen.
The setup shown in the illustration causes the signals to saturate.
With an oscillation amplitude of 10mV and a volt/div setting of 1mV, the signal exceeds the display range.
Since the display height covers only eight boxes, it can only measure up to 8mV.
In this setup, the oscilloscope won’t trigger because the trigger level is set at 10mV, and the slope is set to rise.
At 10mV, the oscilloscope can only detect the peak of the sine wave right after it reaches its highest point and begins to fall.
To fix this, you need to either change the slope setting or lower the trigger level.
This scenario is common when sampling high-frequency signals.
In this case, the signal frequency is 50kHz, while the oscilloscope’s internal sampling rate is 105.5kHz, which is only about twice the signal frequency.
The simulator connects the sampled data points with a simple line, which can lead to inaccurate signal representation when sampling rates are close to the signal frequency.
By using techniques like zero-padding and filtering, you can improve the accuracy.
